Lara Girgis Art

Local Melbourne artist Lara Girgis joins The Good Marketplace this year, showcasing a playful collection of nature-inspired cards, prints, stickers and more. A true creative, Lara works with a range of mediums including painting and digital illustrations to produce her work, which she hopes to inspire others with.

We caught up with Lara to hear more about her art and story:

Hi Lara, tell us a bit about yourself and Lara Girgis Art.

My name is Lara and I’ve just finished my Bachelor in Visual Arts and Design honours year. For my honours project, I’ve been researching ways of bringing art and medical information together to better educate and encourage people living with chronic health conditions. I spent the year making a comic book about life with type 1 diabetes and writing a thesis to go with it.

Outside of this, I love drawing and painting, so even when I’m not studying, I’m probably working on something artistic or crafty. I always feel uplifted when people smile at my artworks. And I hope to make people think a little more deeply about life by exploring quotes and concepts that challenge me and help me grow. I love learning about the natural world and drawing critters and landscapes as I explore outdoors or research different animals.

What are you passionate about?

I’m passionate about bringing joy to people through art and try to do that in all aspects of my practise, whether its designing pigeon birthday cards or researching representations of chronic health in children’s literature.

What does ethical consumerism mean to you?

Operating my art business ethically is the only way I would do it. I believe it’s important to consider how what I produce affects others and, as far as I am able, try to make sure my impact is positive. Aside from using recycled and ethically sourced materials (which probably isn’t that interesting to read about), one of the more exciting things I do is hunting for display stands and storage supplies at op shops. It’s so satisfying when I find something that will work perfectly for my market stall or fit just right in my drawers, and the added knowledge that I’m giving the object a second life, and keeping it out of landfill is a bonus.

Describe your perfect day!

A cloudy spring day, where I can hear the rain on the roof. I might sit inside with the fire on and do some drawing, or I might go on a walk and rescue the worms and snails off the footpath. In the evening I’ll sit inside with a cup of tea and a tv show and work on my cross stitch. I love being able to hear the rain and see the plants getting wet, but I don’t like driving in it!
